Beef Sticks Distributed 2023/2024 School Year:
Beef Sticks Distributed Since 2019:

Beef Sticks for Backpacks (BSFB) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to produce and distribute high quality beef sticks to Colorado backpack programs that help feed kids facing food insecurity on the weekends. Each one-ounce beef sticks contain 8 grams of protein and are produced by students at Colorado State University in the Global Food Innovation Center. Every week beef sticks are distributed to backpack programs such as Food Bank of the Rockies' Totes for Hope program. Backpack programs get enough beef sticks for every food bag at no cost, reducing their burden of food sourcing while ensuring the distribution of beef sticks to children across Colorado. Currently, BSFB produces and donates 20,000 beef sticks per week and aims to increase capacity to 30,000 per week to provide beef sticks to every backpack program in Colorado. Help us give Colorado kids the protein they deserve by donating today!

Kids Need Food to Learn

No one can focus on learning when they are focused on hunger. Hungry children struggle to focus and learn when they are at school.

Welcome

Thank you for visiting Beef Sticks for Backpacks where our mission is to create a world where no child in Colorado suffers from weekend food insecurity.

We're a non-profit organization committed to the goal of distributing high quality beef sticks with 8 grams of protein per serving into kids backpack programs throughout the state of Colorado.  Formed by members of the Colorado agriculture community, our mission is to produce and distribute beef sticks into backpack programs that help feed kids facing food insecurity on the weekends.

With the help of KidsPak of Loveland, Five Rivers Cattle Feeding, Arcadia Asset Management, Colorado Cattlemen’s, Colorado Livestock Association, Colorado State University, and many others we have been able to provide every food insecure child in Larimer County with one beef stick every weekend.  Our long term goal is to expand our program to the rest of the state.  Together we can end hunger.

Why We Do It

In many cases, school-provided meals are the primary source of nutrition for some children. Over 30,000 Colorado kids go hungry on weekends, and are especially deprived of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of protein that the FDA prescribes. While it depends on age, gender, and weight, children ages 4 to 13 need about .45 grams of protein for every pound of body weight, or roughly 20 to 35 grams of protein per day. Organizations like KidsPak in Loveland and Food for Thought Denver provide children with packs of food every weekend.
